In fact, we spent our last night in the “transition” ward, where they have parents practice managing their baby by themselves (the nurses monitor from afar but don’t interfere unless clearly needed), and they removed the bumpers and turned the cozy NICU setup (that resembles a doc-a-tot) into essentially a hard flat crib. When my third baby recently spent a couple days in the NICU, I actually asked the nurses about it, and they said absolutely no way should a similar setup (such as doc-a-tot) be used when a baby was not in the NICU hooked up to monitors with dedicated medical staff at arm’s length. So like, what’s it for exactly?Īlso, it looks so much like the way NICU babies are bundled, that I’ve always thought it takes advantage of NICU parents (whose children are often at increased risk, too). I really don’t know much about it except that I’ve never seen a suggested use for it that doesn’t involve sleeping.
