![]() ![]() If there is a concern, it is the offensive line. Those three players are going to be a big part of the new offense under coordinator Bill O’Brien. One drive later, True freshman Agiye Hall - who has had all the buzz around the program - had a one-handed catch in tight coverage to keep the chains moving in the first half, and two tremendous catches - one of which was a toe tap on the sideline - on the opening drive of the second half. The first of those scores came on a great pass in which he stepped up in the pocket and found tight end Cameron Latu for 59 yards. Quarterback Bryce Young, who is widely regarded as the front-runner in the race to replace Mac Jones, was 16 of 30 for 251 yards and a touchdown. The new-look Crimson Tide offense looked just like the old ones - scary. His debut wasn’t an ocean breeze - he made some mistakes and faced some difficulties - but he certainly showed what he is capable of, as reported by Barrett Sallee of CBS Sports: Saturday, Bryce Young took the reins at Alabama as the presumptive favorite to succeed Mac Jones as the Crimson Tide’s starting quarterback. One can only wonder, on a Saturday filled with spring games across the country, what might have been for USC. He changed his mind in September of 2019. There’s a different connection between USC and Alabama quarterbacks - not in relationship to a USC-versus-Alabama game, but in connection with a change of schools.īryce Young had originally committed to play quarterback at USC, in July of 2018. Here we are, four and a half years later. Alabama crushed USC, and Hurts led the Tide to the national championship game against Clemson. Saban started Blake Barnett against USC and Browne, but whereas Helton kept Browne in and stayed with Browne for a few more games that September, Saban pulled Barnett in favor of Jalen Hurts, who clearly turned out to be the better college quarterback. He made the precise decision Helton was unable to make in that contest in Arlington, Tex.: He switched quarterbacks in the first half and didn’t look back. The Browne-Darnold episode is fascinating and significant in its own right, but what made that quarterback drama at USC even more visible is that Nick Saban quickly pivoted at quarterback in that same USC-Alabama game. ![]() Darnold’s emergence later in that 2016 season made people rightly wonder why Clay Helton didn’t go with Darnold from the very beginning of the 2016 campaign. The stories of former USC quarterbacks Max Browne and Sam Darnold are linked to Alabama, because Browne - not Darnold - started against Alabama in the 2016 season opener. The stories of recent USC quarterbacks are intertwined with the stories of Alabama quarterbacks in more ways than one. ![]()
